Veterans
and Heacham Cricket Club Players
The
second annual charity cricket match for the Philip Wright
& Ernie Maiden Cup between Heacham Cricket Club (HCC) and
Heacham ‘Veterans’ was held 22nd August.
Proceedings commenced on a glorious Sunday afternoon
with a single wicket competition for the under 12’s which
was won by Benji Linsell with Flynn Geragthy a close runner
up.
The
charity match started at 2.00pm with match balls kindly
donated by Gary Rushmore Flooring.
HCC batted first and after being 75 for 3 the wickets
fell quickly; despite good contributions from S Wright (19), M
Wright (21), A Darlow (20), K Dix (35) and P Darlow (21)
HCC were all out for 126.
P. Sopp (Snr) and S Grief bowled very well for the
‘Veterans’, both returning figures of 3 wickets for 8
runs. Many thanks
go to Harry Hornsby and Philip Lee for volunteering to umpire
again this year.
Refreshments
were available throughout the day with thanks to Dennis and
Sandra Dix (the BBQ chefs) and to Alan Howard Butchers for the
great burgers and sausages, Mick Ward (cold drinks
coordinator) and Marie & Wendy Wright (hot drinks and
home-made cakes specialists).
Other attractions enjoyed by many during the day were
the bowling machine and a Tombola stall run by Kat Wright
& Sandy Playford.
The
‘Veterans’ chasing a total of 127 to win, began well and
never looked in trouble. Good
contributions from S Grief (46 not out), I Rix (20) and A
Sadler (34 not out) saw the ‘Veterans’ home with 10 overs
to spare. The pick
of the bowlers for HCC was T Williams with 1 wicket for 3 runs
off 4 overs. The man of the match award went to Andy Wright
for his spectacular dives.
The
raffle, ably run by Andy ‘the Mush’ Playford contributed
well to the total as did all the attractions during the day.
The raffle was won by Tracey Dickinson (£40) who very
kindly donated her prize back into the pot for the chosen
charities, Philip Lee (£20), Sandy Playford (£15) and Gary
Stockdale (£10).
Again
the charity event proved to be a very successful and enjoyable
day. The
organisers would like to extend a special thank you to Chris
Sopp who once again provided the ‘adults refreshments’ for
the day. Thanks
also go to all those who helped either before, during, or
after the event, and to all those who turned up to support on
the day. As a
result Macmillan Cancer Support and Heacham Cricket Club will
share the total monies raised a magnificent total of £771.00.
