Rural Broadband is an offshoot of Positive Computing, an IT services company run by Richard Dix and based in an office at the former family farm in Heacham, Norfolk.

Rural Broadband is focusing on the provision of internet connectivity and other associated services to customers based in rural areas in Norfolk and across the British Isles.

The company offers a variety of services including:

·      Web hosting

·      ADSL connectivity

·      Remote computer support (through Positive Computing)

·      Online Backup

·      Satellite internet connectivity (through BeyonDSL) and installation

Rural Broadband is growing its network of experienced satellite dish installers across the country to be able to provide a complete service to any region in the UK.

How We Are Different

Richard has lived, worked and trained in rural Norfolk all his life and is fortunate enough to have acceptable internet connectivity through ADSL. Richard has valuable experience, first as a farmer and then providing exemplary IT services to his local customers in Norfolk.

Richard has now decided to help other individuals, families, businesses and communities overcome the challenges they face when trying to secure reliable, fast internet connectivity in less well connected parts of the country.

This will be done using currently available methods and the latest developments in technology as they become available.

Rural Broadband Offers More Than Just Internet

Rural Broadband is very much a personal and family-run business, with Richard's father assisting with larger installations. The business runs as a friendly team that offers its customers a commitment to excellent service, backed by a guarantee. We make 3 promises to our customers:

1.     Responses within a guaranteed time period

2.     Friendly and clear communication at all times

3.     If we screw up, we'll pay your next month of service

By offering a high level of service and support, Rural Broadband is seeking to give its customers a unique choice in comparison with other providers.

Richard has been involved with community broadband projects since 2002, when he was part of the team that set up West Norfolk Community Broadband which served thousands of houses and businesses in a five-square mile area. Using ADSL, wireless, cable and satellite technologies Richard has already been involved with hundreds of broadband connections.

Richard recently attended meetings on the subject of rural broadband provisioning with 'Shaping Norfolk's Future' and Suffolk County Council. He is also growing his contacts with rural development and communications experts, Members of Parliament and suppliers in order to keep up-to-date on the latest practices and policies.

Rural businesses struggling to access -high-speed broadband in East Anglia have been thrown a lifeline thanks to a partnership between the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and a satellite broadband internet provider.

The CLA, which has long campaigned for a better rollout of fast, affordable broadband, has teamed up with London-based BeyonDSL  to offer satellite broadband services to its members at reduced prices.

Martin Byron-Grange, sales manager for BeyonDSL.net, said satellite technology offers a solution for those who currently struggle to access high-speed broadband as it works in all areas of the UK and does not rely on the telecoms network.

The service can be obtained through local agents Heacham-based Rural Broadband.

Mr Byron-Grange and Richard Dix, of Rural Broadband, are at the Royal Norfolk Show demonstrating the rural internet system at the CLA stand.

Mr Byron-Grange said: "Our system provides broadband by satellite. The satellite system works without phone lines. There are no geographic restrictions at all.  It works everywhere in the UK ."

The service delivers up to 4 megabits of broadband anywhere and is 100 times faster than dial-up, Mr Dix said:-"We have had quite a lot of interest already, there are areas of Norfolk that have a big, problem. We have been busy in the last 12-months installing these dishes very successfully and customers have been saying how good the service is."

Nicola Currie, CLA regional director for the East, welcomed the service and said: "You-cannot run a business in this day and age without broadband access. You need it for banking and we are increasingly asked to complete forms online, such as VAT and tax returns.

Mrs Currie said Internet access was also vital for social reasons-with research showing that children who did not have access did worse in GCSE exams.

"After the Highlands of Scotland and Central Wales .this is the third worst area for broadband access. It is a hugely important issue."

Mrs Currie said a wireless-based system is also being demonstrated.

Mr Byron-Grange said the satellite broadband equipment costs- £299.99, with a reduction for CLA members, followed by monthly payments.
